The Safety Collaborative was created to bring the latest safety science and human factors solutions into practical applications for safety-critical industries. People ask how we came up with our eye-catching brand; it’s an interesting question! We wanted a logo that reflects our foundations and core ethics. A key part of our approach is ‘getting into the tunnel’, to quote Professor Sydney Dekker. It is much easier to understand events with hindsight, knowing the outcome with a warm cup of coffee in your hand.

However, if you want to understand sense-making and work as done, you need to look with curiosity from the worker’s perspective with the information they had at the time, why it made sense for them to make the decisions they did and what performance-shaping factors were influencing their behaviour. This allows us to drive mitigations and data back into the SMS that are much more aligned with the real world. The tunnel is captured perfectly in the concentric circles of our logo.

The grey reminds us that people are often working in grey areas with ill-defined or fuzzy boundaries or incomplete information that might be quite different to the way we assume our procedures are working in the real-world. The green circle at the centre represents our strong belief in learning and improvement as safety goals, which bring quite a different perspective and go beyond simply aiming to prevent accidents. Finally, the blue type represents trust, the basis of any constructive safety culture.

We are proud to have partnered with the MTR Corporation in late 2023 on a 9-month collaborative research project dedicated to enhancing safety within their operations. With the MTR Corporation's exceptional safety record, built on a foundation of excellence and attention to detail, we approached this project with a deep respect for their commitment to safety and a shared vision for continuous improvement. Given the complexity of their operations and the multiple human factors involved, the MTR Corporation sought to proactively address potential safety issues to further elevate their safety standards.

Working closely with the MTR Corporation's safety and human factors team, we conducted a thorough analysis of their safety systems to identify key risks and develop practical mitigation strategies. By incorporating the latest advancements in safety science, including Adaptive Safety Learning Reviews and a "Learning from All Operations" approach, we provided fresh insights into operational resilience and highlighted areas of strength within the MTR Corporation. This unique approach, grounded in cutting-edge safety methodologies, led to actionable recommendations across the safety system, enhancing safety measures at individual, systemic, and regulatory levels.

Drawing on our extensive experience in aviation and other sectors, we introduced the MTR Corporation to innovative strategies and perspectives that resulted in tangible, real-world solutions tailored to their specific safety challenges. This collaboration not only reinforced the MTR Corporation's dedication to maintaining a safe environment for its employees and the people of Hong Kong, but also underscored our commitment to delivering operational excellence and safety improvements for our clients.
